History of Riverside
In 1870, Riverside was founded by John North and a bunch of Easterners It was formed on the land that was sometime back a Spanish rancho, the Santa Ana River. In 1871 were planted the first orange trees. In 1874, the citrus industry started in Riverside when Eliza Tibbets got three navel orange trees by a friend from Washington. The navel orange industry flourished quickly within a few years. There were over half a million citrus trees in CA by 1882. By 1895, with the development of advanced irrigation systems and refrigerated railroad cars, Riverside became the wealthiest city in the US in terms of the income per capita. The city grew rapidly, and the world famous Mission Inn was built. The city’s unique appeal, character and vibrant past attracts plenty of travelers each year.
